1997

WILDE…Director…Brian Gilbert…
Cast Inc…Stephen Fry…Jude Law…Jennifer Ehle…
We filmed at St Albans Town Hall Herts. over the weekend and when I was queuing up for breakfast about 7 on the Saturday morning Stephen Fry was drinking tea and chatting to some production staff..
I have never seen an actor look so alike to the character he was playing.
Stephen Fry was Oscar Wilde.
I sat in a courtroom for the two days and listened to the long speeches the actors were spouting and again thought how do they do that?
Thinking back to the films I watched as a young man Stephen’s work reminded me of Henry Fonda’s Abe Lincoln, Rod Steiger’s Scarface.

THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE…Director…Jon Amiel…
Cast Inc…Bill Murrey…Joanne Whalley…
Filmed for over a week at EMI Studios Elstree in the same studio I used to film Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) nearly thirty years before.
Jon Amiel came and spoke to me (I hadn’t seen him since we worked on The Singing Detective days) and I tried to keep him out of the church on the first day.
I was to play a photographer in these scenes among the other 200 or so Supporting Artists.
It was a good money week for all of us because of the amount of overtime incurred.

FAIRY TALE: A TRUE STORY…Director…Charles Sturridge…
Cast Inc…Harvey Keitel…Peter O Toole…
Filmed for a few days at Hackney Empire Theatre, E8.
Harvey was playing Harry Houdini (famous escape artist in the 1900s) and the director gives me a line to say to him.
While we’re standing on the stage of this theatre, idly chatting I mentioned to Harvey that I had sung on this stage forty years ago and as quick as a flash he said, "You couldn’t have been any f***ing good if it took you forty years to get back here"
He did laugh at his own joke and I saw the funny side of it as well.

JACKAL…Director…Michael Caton-Jones…Pinewood Studios…
Cast Inc…Bruce Willis…Richard Gere…Sidney Poitier…
An old pal of mine (Bill Westley) is the 1st A.D. on this and he’s got me down to be an American cop for a couple of days..
Bill and I go back to the days of The Champions when we were submarine crew on one of the episodes. Then Bill went onto the production side of the business and never looked back. (his son Kevin is now a 1st A.D.)
Good luck to you Bill it was a pleasure knowing you.

THE APPOCALYPSE WATCH…Director…Kevin Conner…Pinewood Studios…
Cast Inc…Patrick Bergin…John Shea…
Just one day on this guarding the Prime Minister outside of a mock up of No. 10 Downing Street.
Finished early and had a swift half with David Ball (Film Producer)
We talked about a new script I was writing. (Looking For A Rainbow)
He liked what he read and told me to keep plugging away.
(I’m still plugging)

Kavanagh Q.C....Director...Charles Beeson...
  Episode Title....The Ties That Bind...
I worked on this for a few days as a member of the jury and was glued to the storyline.. John Thaw was at his best as usual but a young man in the dock stood out as a great (fairly) newcomer to the biz. Although I think he had been acting for a long time he was that good. His name is Eddie Marsan and have watched him grow over the last ten years. Check
his IMDB.
At the end of the shoot I went up to him and told him how good I thought he was and he thanked me.....Nice guy....
As I was about to leave John Thaw said.."Hello Harry, don't you say hello to your old friends anymore". I said.. "Hello John, didn't think you'd remember me from The Sweeney days". He said... "I always remember a good face from the past".
Still number one in my book............
