West Wickham
Allotments Association (WWAA) is at Hawes
Lane (Opposite Glebe School) in West
Wickham and is a reasonably large site of
7.9 acres in total, comprising 204 plots.
Most plots are approximately 125 sq.
metres (30' x 45' for those, like many of
us who cannot cope with metric!) although
a few are slightly larger (175 sq.
metres). A few plots are sub-divided
and Let as half plots to members who do
not feel able to manage a full sized
plot.
The Hawes Lane site
came into being in 1912, and is now
leased to the Association by Bromley
Council. It is managed by the Management
Committee consisting of members elected
at the November Annual General Meeting.
The Association operates a Trading Shed,
open 10.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays, where
plot holders can purchase seeds,
fertilisers, gardening equipment and
sundries at competitive prices.
The Association is a
friendly organisation and welcomes new
members; all new plot holders are
automatically entered into the Ted
Goodall Cup for the best newcomers
plot and this is presented at the Members'
Xmas Drinks in December. Being a plot
holder offers the chance to meet and make
new friends, exchange ideas, enjoy the
fresh air as well as enjoying the
(literal!) fruits of your labours.
In July we hold a
Barbeque where all plot holders are
invited and our Open Day follows in
August where all plot holders are invited
to help! Funds raised from such events
are donated to our chosen charity, St
Christophers Hospice. The
Members' Xmas Drinks is held shortly
before Christmas a cosy affair in
the Trading Shed with drinks and nibbles
keeping off the cold.
