OBITUARY

David Corbett
(1943-2023)

David Corbett was born in 1943 in Wellington, Shropshire. His father was an agricultural 'implements' manufacturer and his mother the daughter of a methodist minister. He was a teacher, financial supervisor and clerk.

He had many outside interests. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was involved in acting, organising collections for the National Children's Home and a weekly 'Food for Thought' with guest speakers. He involved himself in local community groups and was one of the founding and supportive members of LA21.

His two passions have always been the weather, being a member of the Shopshire Weather Group, and Light Music. His particular love was for the music of Harry Davidson & his orchestra and Those Were The Days. He built up a vast collection of of recorded broadcasts and began an extensive search into the origins of the programme which resulted in him writing and publishing a book on the subject. It's a very comprehensive work, consisting of some 600 pages packed full of facts, anecdotes, photographs and illustrations.

He had a lifelong allegiance to the BBC, avidly listening to his favourite programmes including the news, weather forecasts, anything political, sport and drama.

David had been presenting a two hour programme of Light Music on Serenade Radio for the last five years, which he thoroughly enjoyed putting together and which was very popular.

He had a regular correspondence with the BBC, commenting on quality of sound, local radio and programme content & scheduling. The notes he kept on all of this were meticulous and comprehensive.

He was a well known figure localy, riding his bike, doing his shopping and visiting favourite local cafés where he built up a large and loyal group of friends.

He was a kind and gentle man, very approachable, non-judgemental and interested in everyone.

He will be sadly missed.

Penny Carnill (sister)
